Yo! Clueless Clooney
He thinks that he is a latter-day Cary Grant. In fact, Clueless Clooney is a latter-day Archie Leach:

THE NAKED APE GETS DRESSED. For those who strive for better things and who understand, as did Ben Jonson, that: "the pipe marks the point at which the orang-utan ends and man begins". - And those who understand S T Coleridge's: "While Fate tramples on things of beauty, the indignant human heart shall utter them."
Probably Armani. Definitely confused.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is a bit unfair to compare George Clooney against Cary Grant.
ReplyDeleteDifferent culture. Different times.
Grant came from a time of impeccable dress and manners and propriety. The same cannot be said for our times, unforutnately.
Therefore, Clooney has no cultural touchstone. In comparison, Grant had many.
Seitelman - well, Clooney has got Cary Grant as a touchstone. In fact, in a real sense (owing to the films), Cary Grant will never die. Moreover, George Clooney had a considerably better start in life that Archie Leach had; has bags of blunt, spondoolicks, dough and ends up looking as though he's been dressed in somebody else's clothes.
ReplyDeletePS Mind you, I entirely agree with your observations on our times...
ReplyDeleteIt's almost impressive how hard celebrities make it look to dress well.
ReplyDeleteHollywood dresses badly because they have no culture. Only European aristocrats and the like have good style.
ReplyDeleteAaargh! The trouser fabric pooling at the bottom is almost offensive! Jeez you'd think the feller would have had his own tux made by now...
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately for Clooney (and the majority in Hollywood) the studio system is long gone; and with it the professional handlers who would never let the talent appear like that in public.
