Style Icon XXXIII: Leslie Howard

As The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sir Percy Blakeney, in the 1934 film, opposite Merle Oberon, with Raymond Massey, menacing as the evil Chauvelin:

And of, course, as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With The Wind (1939), with Clark Gable and the mesmerizing Vivien Leigh (one of England's finest exports):

  1. Howard had a great style and a subtle soft spoken manner --perfect to play Blakeny.

  2. Strangely, Baroness Orczy did not originally favour him for the part but she could hardly have been disappointed in the result: especially when he saunters back in to reclaim "his demned fine hat" from Chauvelin, astonished that Blakeney has survived the 'firing squad'. Great film and I hope that youngsters today still watch it but I have my doubts.
